I write these topical tax newsletters once each year. I usually finish them in early December, after Washington passes the year's new laws. As you read previous years' versions, you will quickly discern that I am not a big fan of the IRS. But they are only hopeless and helpless bureaucrats. Congress and the President (politicians all) deserve the real blame for the complex mess that is our income tax system. Voluntary compliance is dropping. One of these years the income tax system will die of its own weight. Then the politicians will be forced to resort to a simpler-to-administer system, such as Europe's Value Added Tax. Until the current system fails, the politicians will continue to make the income tax as we know it even more complex.
